When I first started using Skinceuticals retinol 1.0 my skin got real red and peeled. It peeled for days. I almost gave up. I stuck in there and now I get so so many complements! It has done wonders for my skin! The only bad thing is that the bottle is a poor design. The last bottle I received I had to send back because the product would not even come out. I would say about 75% of the time the product comes out when I first order it. I will say I will continue to use this cream! If it doesn't come out I will send it back and get a new one. I am a 35 year old woman that freckles easily and worshiped the sun and since I have been using it I get carded all the time when I order a drink at the restaurant. I feel awesome!

How does one begin to review a product that won't come out of the bottle? I have always been very pleased with all of my skinceuticals purchases--but this one ....It wasn't possible for me to return because I live in Europe and have products sent to my mother and pick them up when I visit--I tried for 3 days and it never came out--I turned it upside down and pumped and pumped--and beat it--finally it came out--but not reliably--now I am a cosmetic bottle mechanic--it works--I like the product so far--but wait until they package it in a new bottle before buying!

Love that retinol!
”
-July 29, 2011
I've tried a few high-level retinol creams, and I'm a huge fan of this one. It's hard to beat this price when other 1% retinol creams tend to be at least $75. This little guy has worked wonders in terms of brightening, smoothing, and evening skin tone. The pump is a little weird; all four bottles I've gone through have had this issue, allowing for just a tiny amount per pump. But hey, it comes out, and I suppose that's all that matters. I use a pea-sized amount every evening (sunlight renders retinol inactive) just before bed, and voila, a fresh face ensues. This has a lovely texture as well and smoothes easily over my skin. My skin is pretty hearty, but if yours is more sensitive, starting with a lower-level retinol product would be probably be a good idea. This does what it says it will do--not overnight, but with continued use, the results are obvious and worth the wait!

I bought this product two days ago. The pump on the first bottle did not work, so I exchanged it for another...and that one didn't work either!!! I've got bad luck!! However, looking at the reviews here, it looks like this is a common packaging problem for this product. I hope they fix it soon, but for now I'll have to find a different retinol. :(

1st pump didn't work, returned to skin dr. You do not get anything out of this compared too a tube. I would never use this product again. Love, La Roche Posay and for some reason I can,t find it, even in France. I'll do without before I buy this product.

By far the best I've tried
”
-October 21, 2010
Over the last few years I've been using numerous retinoids, including Philosophy, Skinmedica and Revision, but until I started using this stuff, I didn't realise how ineffective they were.
I've been using this for a couple of months now and my skin has never looked better. I use it every second night as it is quite strong. I had a bit of flaking for the first 6 weeks or so - I never got the flakies with other retinoids - but it's been worth it, as my skin is glowing and people are commenting on how young my skin is looking.
If your skin is sensitive, this will probably be too strong for you.

Awful Pump!
”
-October 3, 2010
The cream itself feels wonderful on my skin, but the pump works poorly from when I first got it. It's going to be impossible to use up all of this product in such a container. I'm happy with the product itself, but there are many other good retinol products out there that are packaged better - avoid this one, for sure!

I loved this product and what it did for my skin, but soon the pump stopped working. I contacted the company, but they said they didn't know of a problem with it. They should look at the reviews on this site! I will not use the product again because it is a waste of money when the pump stops working. Mine quit working when it was only half empty.

I use several Skinceutical products and love the retinol as well but the pump stopped working after about 10 days. I was told to tap the capped bottle upside down about 15 times on a table top to remove trapped air bubbles. Didn't work and ended up sending the bottle back. The product itself is great. Very effective yet gentle enough for my rosacea prone skin.

Works great as an occasional treatment.
”
-March 26, 2010
I think Retinol is is one of the few products on the market that actually works. It is quite harsh and I would recommend use only as a spot treatment on dark areas like sun spots, acne spots, hormonal blotches etc. unless you've got some seriously tough skin. It basically peels the top layer of skin off of the area treated and you will get some dry skin & flaking where you use it. You only need a tiny drop, it dispenses a very small amount with a pump, and the bottle lasts a very long time. This is not a permanent treatment of course since sun spots go deep into the skin layers, but it does a better job than microdermabrasion & is less painful. I use this along with the Intense Line Defense & follow up with the Epidermal Repair which is awesome for treated skin. Skinceuticals makes very good products and the prices are not quite as ridiculous as some other brands.
I've tried many different brands of retinol treatments over many years, and, for me, some are amazing, some are average, some are poor. Skinceuticals 1.0 is "average" for me, because it does all the things it's supposed to do, but it took longer to get less improvement than I see with others. The thing I noticed the most was that Skinceuticals didn't give me the "glow" I get from other retinols. It definitely kept my skin smooth, healthy, plumped, and clear, but it seemed more like maintenance than improvement. I've had 2 bottles where the pump simply quit working after two weeks of use. It's hard to get cream out even when the pump does work, so this is probably the worst packaging I've ever seen for a product that creates high expectations.

How to fix pump!
”
-February 16, 2010
I love this product...however, the pump stopped working on my 2nd week! TIP: Pull the top white part off and run it under hot water then pump the stick part that is left for a bit. You will feel when it is working. Dry the top part off and put it back on the pump and it should work. Good Luck!
